Description
Despite tasting similar, licorice and aniseed come from completely different plants. Licorice is a root that comes from a herbaceous plant. It has a long history as a prized flavouring, and was even used medicinally in ancient Egypt. The active ingredient in licorice is glycyrrhizic acid, which has been used as a sweetener in teas and desserts for centuries. Aniseed, by contrast, is a little more spicy than licorice and is derived from a different plant. It is the oil that is often used as a flavouring in confectionery.
