Description
Marshmallow has its origins In ancient Egypt, where it was originally a remedy for sore throats which took several days to make. Made from the root of the mallow plant, it was boiled, mixed with honey and thickened as it cooled. As it traveled around the world, the traditional medicinal recipe gradually transformed into more of a sweet confection, with the addition of sugar and sometimes egg whites. By the time it reached the United States in the 20th century, an automated machine process had been invented that created the whipped confection in a much shorter period of time. The modern day marshmallow as we know it, was invented.
Today marshmallows are eaten around the world and are in high demand within the food industry, in bakeries, patisseries and for making confectionery. They are widely used in recipes for rocky road, truffles, biscuits, cakes and brownies. They are also eaten on their own and as an accompaniment to hot chocolate.
