More Information
A brightly coloured lollipop is almost guaranteed to bring a smile to the face of any child. Synonymous with simple childhood delight, it’s hard to imagine a time when the lollipop didn’t exist.
While the pleasure of lollipops are simple, the origins of lollipops are more complicated. It wasn’t until the mass production of sugar and hard candy that the lollipop could take its current form, but its earliest origins may have been in 17th century England, when hard candy was placed on a stick, making it easier to eat. Some believe the term lollipop literally meant ‘tongue slap’ (the northern english word for tongue was ‘‘lolly’).
There are other examples of confectionery companies putting candy on sticks throughout the early 20th century. It was George Smith (owner of the Bradley Smith Company) however, who would ultimately take credit for the invention, when he trademarked the term ‘lollipop’ in 1931.
